JOB TITLE: Healthy Roots Garden Educator

JOB DESCRIPTION

Part-Time @ $20/hr

20-25 hrs/wk through October 2026

Possibility of position/project continuation - TBD

The Healthy Roots Garden Educator will work closely with the Coordinated School Health Departments with Sweetwater City School Systems @ Sweetwater Junior High School to plan, coordinate, and implement the Health Council’s “Healthy Roots” farm-to-school (F2S) garden education program.

“Healthy Roots”, and is intended to simultaneously

1) PLANT seeds of knowledge and nutritious foods, to

2) CULTIVATE curiosity, connection, and schoolhouse café opportunities, and to

3) GROW students’ skillsets, confidence, and the availability of sustainably produced produce for locals. “Healthy Roots” will promote personal and environmental health through the increased understanding of local students regarding the connections between earth, food, and community. Students will engage in hands-on-learning experiences with emphasis on “garden education” from the process of creating the system(s) for growing food, to the process of harvesting and cooking with the crop, to the process of being environmentally conscious and distributing excessive food to food banks and those in need.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Healthy Roots Garden Educator will oversee project planning, will coordinate necessary meetings/trainings/etc for stakeholders, will promote collaborative program implementation, and will ultimately facilitate the “Healthy Roots” F2S garden education program as agreed upon by partnering agencies/individuals. This will involve developing/building/repairing garden structures, planting and growing food intended for use by the cafeteria partners and students, facilitating education programs to teach youth how to grow/harvest/prepare fresh locally-sourced foods, and distributing any excess foods harvested beyond need of the partnering school sites.

REQUIREMENTS:

 Valid driver’s license

 Associates or bachelor’s degree preferred

 2 years of experience with an agriculture/environmental/gardening education program

 2 references, preferably one personal and one professional

 Passed background check & hiring screening

 Desire to work with children and ability to facilitate garden education curricula

 Skill for cultivating plants and gardens

 Professional & effective communication skills

 Confidence coordinating/collaborating/hosting meetings with community stakeholders

 Resourceful and creative

 Passionate about making a difference

This is a grant-funded position with the Monroe County Health Council, provided through the SafePath grant consortium and the MCOAC grant funds.
